Amnesty calls on fiji to probe torture allegations against three police officers over torture allegations against Fiji’s foreign minister
The United States and Fiji have urged Fiji to probe allegations that the country’s foreign minister is involved in torture.
In a letter sent to Prime Minister Steven Marshall today, the two countries called on the Fijian government to open up an investigation into allegations that a group of Fiji officials «exhibited unprofessional conduct to a member of the US State Department.»
A US official described the allegations in a series of tweets last week as «unfounded and deeply disturbing.»
In an interview with RT earlier this month, Marshall told the Guardian that Fijian officials «have a responsibility to the people in the Republic of Fiji that they do things properly and they have been reprimanded» by US authorities.
Fiji’s Foreign Minister Fijio Timani said last week that Fiji had established a commission to investigate allegations of torture against his country’s foreign minister, which is currently being led by two of the country’s top court judges.
In an interview with RT the same day as the Guardian, a statement issued by the Justice Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control in Washington did not deny that it had granted immunity to officials of Fiji.
The statement described the immunity as «limited» and claimed that «it does not apply to those entities that have received government funds, contracts, grants, or other transactions, such as travel.»
Th바카라 룰e statement added: «The United States has no interest in facilitating the extradition of fugitives – and the United States is seeking to pursue those in the fugitives’ countries who pose a continuing risk of flight.»
The Fijian government issued a statement late on Thursday night in response, noting that the embassy had been unable to receive the request and that «there is no basis for any such request being received.»
The Foreign Ministry added: «A few days before the Guardian story, it was already known that our Ministry of Foreign Affairs had received such a letter. I have been told no such request for immunity had보성출장샵 been received from our Government. It can be read all over the world of the Fijian Embassy, and so the letter cannot be regarded as an official one.»
The statement continues: «As of today, the US Government has not responded to the request regarding immunity for Fijian officials and the government did not receive any such letter.»
